Congratulations to our 2009 Lucille and Derby Dustin Future Scholars:
Dina Izenstark. Dina Izenstark recently completed her Master’s Degree at the University of Illinois in the Department of Recreation, Sport, and Tourism. She received her undergraduate degree in Recreation Management from the University of Illinois in 2007, graduating with highest honors. Her sponsor is Dr. Megan Janke, Professor in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism at the University of Illinois. In 2009 she was selected by the faculty in the RST department for the Ronald H. Dodd award, a special recognition for a master’s student who displays outstanding leadership, scholarship, and professional involvement. Dina is interested in examining the role of parks and open spaces in the promotion and maintenance of health. Her master’s thesis explored the role of community-based exercise programs among older adults in a recreation setting. Dina would like to continue to study the impact of outreach and community-based wellness programs that promote health and well-being in schools and communities in order to make physical activity and fitness fun for children while raising their awareness and appreciation of the natural environment. Dina was nominated by Dr. Megan Janke. Her co-mentors at the NRPA Congress were Drs. Doug Kleiber and Linda Caldwell.
Angela M. Meyer. As a graduate student at the University of Montana, Angela explores the interactions between human culture and the natural world. She is currently teaching technical writing and working with Bill Borrie in the department of Society and Conservation in the College of Forestry and Conservation pursuing a M.S. in recreation management. For her master’s thesis, she is interested in the conceptual and somatic understandings of embodiment, embodied knowledge, and lived experiences in wilderness from an ecofeminist perspective. It is Angela’s hope that this project will demonstrate how and why embodiment is indispensible for environmental ethics and education as well as how and why embodied experiences in the outdoors have the potential to help girls and women resist the oppressive and normative gender roles, body perceptions, and gender prescriptions that society and families dictate and demand of “females” in the United States. For doctoral studies, Angela is interested in building upon the conceptual foundation of her master’s thesis and continuing to focus on embodiment, gender, and outdoor education. Specifically, she wants to explore a critical, collaborative, and participatory methodology on these topics. A doctoral degree that focuses on these areas will also help her realize many other significant and long-term career plans such as managing and advocating for wilderness and teaching and empowering females through wilderness programs and environmental education. Angela was nominated by Dr. Bill Borrie. Her mentor at the NRPA Congress was Dr. Diane Samdahl
Jill Naar. Jill Naar is in her second year as a master's student at East Carolina University working under the direction of Dr. Kindal Shores of the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department. Jill did her undergraduate work at Appalachian State University, earning a Bachelor's of Science in Recreation Management and a Bachelor's of Arts in French. In addition, she completed a certificate in Gerontology from the University of Washington. Her work experiences have included guest relations at Walt Disney World, outreach with university international affairs offices and program development and management at youth summer camps as well as retirement communities.Jill's research thus far has included a study of the relationship between location, social context and enjoyment of physical activity of rural adult women and she is currently working on her thesis, investigating how baby boomers innovate through international tourism, replicating a similar study for the first time in the United States. She plans to continue with a PhD related to leisure, tourism and aging with particular focus on international experiential tourism behaviors and motivations of adults in the third chapter of life. Jill would like to explore qualitative methods in her future research, enhance her teaching skills as well as continue to be involved with university international programs during her doctoral studies. Jill was nominated by Dr. Kindal Shores. Her mentor at the NRPA Congress was Dr. Dan Dustin.
The Selection Committee for the 2009 Lucille and Derby Dustin Future Scholars Program was Dr. Mike Mahon (Chair and Academy of Leisure Sciences (ALS) representative), Dr. Lowell Caneday (Society for Parks and Recreation Educators (SPRE) representative), Dr. Myron Floyd (ALS representative), and Dr. Dana Kivel (SPRE representative). |

A newly established endowment at Clemson University will fund graduate student research on children's play, creativity on playgrounds and playground safety. The Dr. Herbert and Juanita G. Brantley Graduate Assistance Endowment honors Herbert Brantley of Bloomington, Ind., the first leader of the Clemson Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management (PRTM) who served in that capacity for 21 years, and his wife, Juanita “Johnnie” Brantley, who spent more than 30 years in public education.
The endowment is earmarked for graduate students studying children's play and creativity at Clemson, which focuses on the value of play and the deficit of play activities in modern society. The safety of playground equipment also is scrutinized as more than 46,000 visits to emergency rooms by children under the age of 15 are recorded each year.
